Why I Left Photography - and Why I Came Back

People have asked me why I stepped away from photography—and what made me decide to return.

The simple answer is that I never stopped loving photography. I stepped away because health issues made the way I was working feel unsustainable. At the time, I believed I had only two choices: keep pushing myself or walk away completely. So I walked away.

For a while, I truly thought that chapter of my life was over.

But creativity has a way of staying with you. I continued to notice the light, the expressions and the fleeting little moments that deserve to be remembered. I still saw photographs everywhere. The passion hadn’t disappeared; it was simply waiting for me to find a better way forward.

Looking back, my biggest regret is that I didn’t realise I could have simplified. I didn’t need to give up something I loved—I needed to change the way I was doing it.

Returning differently

Coming back to photography hasn’t been about recreating my old business. It has been about building something that feels more personal, more intentional and much more like me.

This time, I am choosing the sessions I genuinely love. I am working at a pace that allows me to give each family, baby, child or pet my full care and attention. I am creating an experience that feels relaxed instead of rushed, because beautiful photographs don’t come from forcing perfect moments. They come from helping people feel comfortable enough to be themselves.

That is what Mandy J Photography is about.

Your session should feel like you

I don’t believe photography sessions should follow a rigid formula. Every family is different, every child has their own personality, and every connection has its own story.

Before a session, I want to learn a little about you. Are your children energetic, shy or wonderfully cheeky? Does your family feel most at home outdoors, or would a quiet studio session suit you better? Are there particular relationships, details or moments you never want to forget? If a beloved pet is part of your family, they deserve to be included in the story too.

Those things help me shape a session around the people in front of my camera—not ask them to fit into somebody else’s idea of what a family photograph should look like.

Of course, I will guide you. I will help with planning, clothing, locations and all those little questions that can make booking a session feel overwhelming. During the shoot, I will suggest positions and gently direct you when needed. But there will also be room for movement, laughter, cuddles, personality and the unexpected moments that often become the favourites.

Perfect behaviour isn’t required. You don’t need to know how to pose, and you certainly don’t need to believe you’re photogenic. You only need to arrive as yourselves.

Why I returned

I returned because photographs matter to me.

Children grow. Families change. Pets leave pawprints on our hearts but never stay as long as we wish they could. The tiny details we think we’ll always remember can soften with time. A photograph gives us something tangible to hold onto—a look, a connection, a season of life exactly as it was.

I also returned because creating matters to me. Photography is more than operating a camera or delivering a gallery. It is noticing people. It is finding beauty in genuine connection and preserving moments that might otherwise pass quietly by.

Stepping away taught me something important: returning to what you love doesn’t mean you have to return in exactly the same way. Sometimes you come back with clearer boundaries, a stronger sense of purpose and a much better understanding of what matters.

That is how I am returning—older, wiser, more grounded and still completely in love with telling people’s stories through photographs.

This new chapter of Mandy J Photography is intentionally simpler, deeply personal and centred on the sessions I love most. I am so excited to welcome both familiar faces and new families in front of my camera.
